New Year in the Maldives

December and January fall right in the dry, sunniest high season in the Maldives (the northeast monsoon, Iruvai). Daytime temperatures are blissful – between 28°C and 31°C, with the Indian Ocean maintaining a warm, crystal-clear 28°C. Rainfall is minimal, seas are calm with up to 30 meters underwater visibility, making it the supreme season for sunbathing, world-class snorkeling, and open-air beachfront celebrations under the stars.

Bulgarian and EU citizens receive a free 30-day tourist visa upon arrival at Male Airport (Visa on Arrival). An international passport valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry is mandatory (national ID cards are not accepted). All arriving passengers must fill out the free online IMUGA traveler declaration within 96 hours prior to both arrival and departure. Minors under 18 traveling with one parent require a notarized travel authorization and copy of their birth certificate.

Each resort occupies its own private island, with transfers tailored to atoll location: Resorts near Male use speedboats (15–50 minutes). Outer pristine atolls feature scenic seaplane flights (25–45 minutes), landing directly on the water by your resort jetty, or domestic flights combined with a short speedboat ride. Seaplane flights operate during daylight hours only and provide breathtaking aerial panoramas over turquoise atoll rings.

While the local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), all private island resorts price and bill extra charges in US Dollars (USD). Incidentals, excursions, and spa services are charged to your villa and settled at check-out with international credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex). Carrying small US Dollar banknotes (issued post-2013) is recommended for personalized tipping.

Flights from Sofia to Male include up to 23 kg checked luggage and up to 8 kg cabin luggage per passenger. If your resort involves a seaplane transfer, Trans Maldivian Airways standards apply: up to 20 kg checked and up to 5 kg cabin luggage per passenger. Any excess weight on seaplanes is payable locally at the seaplane terminal check-in (approx. $5/kg + local taxes).
